The production of Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen” at the Vienna State Opera, scheduled for 2026, will be a highlight of the 2026/2027 season. Eschewing the familiar, romanticized vision of Andalusia, the acclaimed Spanish director Calixto Bieito presents a gritty, realistic world steeped in the atmosphere of life on the border, smuggling, and the struggle for inner freedom.
A star-studded cast: the role of Carmen is performed by French mezzo-soprano Stéphanie d’Oustrac, while the role of Don José is sung by legendary tenor Roberto Alagna. Philippe Sly sings the role of the toreador Escamillo.
