The Palio di Siena is a famous and passionate historic bareback horse race held in the city of Siena (Tuscany, Italy), right in the main medieval square, Piazza del Campo. The event on August 16, known as the Palio dell’Assunta, is dedicated to the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
The riders compete bareback on unsaddled horses. The race itself lasts only about 90 seconds (three laps).
This is not merely a sporting competition, but a major historical festival with medieval roots, in which city districts (*contrade*) compete against one another.
