Vienna Ice World (originally known in German as “Wiener Eistraum”, meaning “Viennese Ice Dream”) is one of the world’s largest outdoor artificial ice rinks; it opens annually on Rathausplatz (City Hall Square) in the heart of Vienna.
What makes this skating rink unique?
Scale and two-level layout: The total ice surface area exceeds 10,000 m². The project’s highlight is the Sky Rink—a unique two-story ice terrace (a rink on two levels) accessible via a special ice ramp, offering the chance to skate while enjoying a view of the illuminated Town Hall.
Romantic paths: Instead of the usual enclosed rink, the venue offers a system of ice lanes and winding paths that weave right through the trees of the adjacent Town Hall Park. All of them are spectacularly illuminated in the evening.
Infrastructure and entertainment: A professional rental facility operates on-site, offering around 2,000 pairs of heated skates. In addition to recreational skating, the beginner areas are transformed after 5:00 PM into lanes for *Eisstockschießen* (Austrian curling).
Atmosphere and gastronomy: Numerous food stalls are set up around the ice rink, offering a chance to warm up with punch or mulled wine and sample traditional Austrian dishes (with the organizers emphasizing sustainability and using up to 75% organic products).
Small ice rink as part of the Christmas Market: A small ice skating area opens early in the square and operates from November 13, 2026, to January 6, 2027.
